Copia vs YNAB

An honest comparison of Copia and YNAB. Both are zero-based budgeting apps. Here is what each does better and what the $10/month difference buys.

The short version

Copia and YNAB agree on the most important thing. Zero-based budgeting works. Give every dollar a job, check the budget before you spend, adjust when life happens. The difference is what surrounds that method and what it costs. YNAB is $14.99/month. Copia is $4.99/month, and you can run a manual budget for free.

Where YNAB is better

YNAB has been teaching its method for over a decade and the tooling around it is deep. It has transaction splits, a loan payoff calculator, category targets with month-ahead tracking, mobile widgets, offline access, and YNAB Together, which lets up to six people share one subscription. It also has a 34 day trial and a certified coaching program. If you want the full YNAB methodology experience with a partner or family, YNAB earns its price. Copia does not have splits, sharing, widgets, or offline mode today.

Where Copia is better

Copia automates more of the boring parts. Our rules engine auto-categorizes and tags transactions as they sync, something YNAB mostly leaves to you. Receipt scanning turns a paper receipt into categorized line items. The Copia Assistant can build a budget sheet for you, suggest subcategory amounts from your history, and make approved changes directly. YNAB has no AI assistant and no receipt scanning.

We also think the free tier matters. YNAB gives you 34 days and then asks for $14.99/month. Copia gives you manual budgeting free forever, and you pay $4.99/month only when you want bank sync and the automation features.

Pricing

YNAB is $14.99/month. Copia is $4.99/month for everything, with a free manual tier and no yearly commitment required. Our price is beta pricing, and we will tell you before it ever changes.

Switching

Export your YNAB register as CSV and bring it into Copia with the import wizard. Your category structure will not transfer automatically, but setting up a Copia budget sheet takes a few minutes and the Assistant can draft one from your imported history. If you get stuck, ask us in Discord.
