Copia vs Monarch Money

An honest comparison of Copia and Monarch Money. Where Monarch is stronger, where Copia is stronger, and how the pricing actually differs.

The short version

Monarch Money is an all-in-one financial hub. It tracks your net worth, your investments, and your budget, and it is built for couples and households. Copia is a focused budgeting app. We go deeper on the budget itself and we charge $4.99/month instead of $14.99.

If you mostly want to budget, we think Copia is the better deal. If you want a dashboard for your entire financial life, Monarch does more today. We would rather tell you that up front than have you find out after you subscribe.

Where Monarch is better

We use our competitors, so we will be specific. Monarch has dedicated net worth tracking with history, investment portfolio views, credit score monitoring, and household sharing so partners can budget together. It also supports transaction splits and a shared review workflow. Copia has none of those today. Household sharing is on our roadmap, and we publish what we ship every week in the changelog.

Where Copia is better

Copia is zero-based budgeting first, not a reporting layer with a budget attached. Every dollar gets a job, and the budget sheet is the center of the app. We also include things Monarch does not have or charges more to reach. Receipt scanning breaks a grocery run into line items and categorizes each one. The Copia Assistant can actually make changes to your budget with your approval, not just summarize your week. Our rules engine, tags, CSV import and export, and AI categorization are all part of the one $4.99 plan.

There is also a real free tier. You can run a full manual budget in Copia without a card on file. Monarch has a 7 day trial and no free plan.

Pricing

Monarch Core is $14.99/month, or about $8.33/month if you pay $99.99 for a year up front. Monarch Plus is about $199/year. Copia is $4.99/month with every feature included, and the manual tier is free. That price is beta pricing, and we will tell you before it ever changes.

Switching

You can export your transactions from Monarch as CSV and import them into Copia with our import wizard. Bank connections use Plaid, the same provider Monarch uses, so your institutions will almost certainly be supported. If something does not carry over cleanly, tell us in Discord and one of the two of us will look at it.
