Copia vs Goodbudget

An honest comparison of Copia and Goodbudget. Both have a real free plan. Goodbudget is envelope budgeting. Copia is zero-based budgeting with optional bank sync at $4.99/month.

The short version

Goodbudget is envelope budgeting on the web, iPhone, and Android. You fund envelopes, spend from them, and stop when an envelope is empty. The free plan covers 20 envelopes and two devices. Premium is $10/month or $80/year and adds bank sync, more envelopes, and more history.

Copia is zero-based budgeting. Income sits at the top of a sheet, and you assign it to categories. Manual accounts and CSV import are free. Bank sync, rules, receipts, and the assistant are $4.99/month.

If you think in cash envelopes and want something that has been around since 2009, Goodbudget is a good fit. If you want a full budget sheet plus sync and receipts later, that is Copia.

Where Goodbudget is better

The envelope metaphor is the whole product, and it is easy to explain to a partner. Native iOS and Android apps are in the stores. Household sharing on devices is built in (two devices free, five on Premium). There is no AI layer to ignore, and the free plan is actually usable if you are willing to type.

Copia does not have store listings or household sharing yet. If those two things decide it, Goodbudget wins today.

Where Copia is better

Once you want bank connections, Copia is the cheaper paid plan, and it includes more of the automation we actually use. Rules, AI categorization, receipt line items, email ingest, photo import, insights, tags, and the assistant are all on the $4.99 plan. Goodbudget Premium is mostly unlimited envelopes plus Plaid.

The Copia free plan is not capped at 20 categories. You get the full sheet, custom categories, bulk entry, and CSV import and export. You pay when you want the bank and the AI, not when you outgrow a category limit.

Pricing

Goodbudget is free for 20 envelopes, or $10/month / $80/year for Premium. Copia is free for manual budgeting, or $4.99/month for bank sync and automation. That Copia price is beta pricing, and we will tell you before it ever changes.

Switching

Export Goodbudget transactions from the website as CSV and import them into Copia. Envelope names will not become Copia categories automatically, but you can recreate the structure in Settings in a sitting. If you were on Premium only for bank sync, connect Plaid in Copia and keep the rest of the $4.99 features.
